Product Description

He was the screen's ultimate romantic lead, a man's man and every woman's desire: Clark Gable, the undisputed King of Hollywood. From his Oscar winning role in It Happened One Night to his immortal portrayal of Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind, Gable crafted a screen persona of the blunt but gallant hero opposite the screen's greatest leading ladies. Yet he endured years of rejection before stealing the public's heart and his star-crossed romance with Carole Lombard is still remembered as one of Hollywood's greatest tragedies. Here is the complete chronicle of Gable's legendary life, captured with archival film, photos, and the moving recollections of those who knew him best.BIOGRAPHY presents the thrilling story of this monarch of the movies and his glittering kingdom in the golden age of Hollywood.

A&E's Biography documentaries are usually stylishly produced, intriguing peeks behind the scenes of a famous life. Unfortunately, though the subject is both stylish and intriguing, this is not the case with Biography: Clark Gable. One gets the feeling that the program's original interview sources must have fallen through, leaving the fimmakers no choice but to make do with an aging and less-than-coherent Frank Capra, a biographer who seems obsessed with Gable's five marriages, and Gable's son, John Clark Gable, who was born after his father's death and inherited his good looks but not his charm. All that John Gable really knows about his father he learned from watching his movies, which doesn't put him much ahead of the rest of us. Clark Gable's rakish onscreen presence made women swoon, but it's hard to see why in the film clips used in this video because they are surprisingly poor quality. An actor who was the king of Hollywood's golden age, who immortalized Rhett Butler, and who made undershirt sales plummet after he bared his chest in It Happened One Night deserves better than this pallid tribute. --Larisa Lomacky Moore
