I bought this DVD for my personal enjoyment. I own it on VHS. A fun film.


Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - I've owned the soundtrack for over 30 years, Now I finally decided to see the movie

I think I caught part of the movie on TV back in the eighties and it didn't quite capture my attention. But, since, I've always loved Marvin Hamlisch's soundtrack, I thought that I should give it a go to see the movie in its entirety. It's pretty good. It's great to see a movie with a young Paul Newman and Robert Redford. Plus, having Charles Durning and Harold Gould really added some class to the whole concept of professional con men of the 1930's. Eileen Brennen is not the most attractive woman in Hollywood, but she really fit the part in this film because being glamorous isn't really the importance of her role here. I still think her best performance was playing opposite of Goldie Hawn in "Private Benjamin".

Pulling off the ultimate con at the end of this film was a great "feel good" moment, which is probably the wrong way to feel because, all through the movie, we are following and supporting the "bad guys." But, that's the fun of enjoying a film like this. You feel like you're participating in the crime, but you're not really guilty of anything.

You know what, I think I will watch it again today. And I'm going to keep the soundtrack CD in my car for a while. I'm glad that I finally got to see this movie.

I'd never seen this movie and it is one of my wife's all-time favorites. She refers to it often. Finally got this DVD and now I see why. What a great movie!!! This is truly one of the all-time classics and a must-see movie for generations to come.

The Sting is not a sequel to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, but it has all the feel of "here we go again" as the Paul Newman and Robert Redford steal the screen. A dynamic plot played by two actors in their prime leads to an amazing experience for the viewer. Get this movie, rent it, buy it, but definitely see it because it is still one of the greatest movies around. It's currently number 99 all time on IMDb's top 250 and rightfully in the top 100 36 years after its release.

It was great to rewatch this movie this weekend. I haven't seen it in a long time. As one reviewer said everyone should see this movie once in their lifetime. Robert Redford,and the late Paul Newman and Robert Shaw delivered in their roles. No wonder this movie deserved the Academy Awards. A very entertaining story from start to finish. Worth watching it again and again!

This is a former Best Picture winner - and six additional Academy Awards - that is pure entertainment. It doesn't make any kind of political statements and it doesn't serve a social cause. It's just pure, 100% entertainment - just how the movies should be. Redford and Newman are stellar together in this one. They come together as the seasoned con man (Newman) and the up-and-comer (Redford) to pull off a con against a dangerous mobster and ruffian. This one has drama, comedy and some action. Anyone who hasn't taken the time to watch "The Sting" needs to see it at least once. If for no other reason, just for old time's sake and to watch a classic combining two of the great ones of Hollwood.

"The Sting" is an example of the finest film-making. The acting is superb. Robert Redford and Paul Newman showed their excellence in this film. Along with a strong supporting cast, they make you care about the characters in such a way, you want to help in the "con" they are setting up. Besides the excellent acting, the music, Scott Joplin ragtime, compliments the plot and sets the mood for every scene. The direction of "The Sting" brought the script to life-it keeps the audience interested and involved with the story.

"The Sting", set in 1930's, is about a couple con artists who set up a professional "con" on a mobster for revenge. Robert Shaw was very convincing as the mobster boss who is the "mark". It is a compelling film that will entertain you. The ending is classic and perfect-just like the rest of the movie. It is not surprising that it won "Best Picture" Oscar in 1973, as well as other awards.

Hooker (Redford) is a small-time confidence man working with his mentor and partner, Luther (Jones). By accident, they sting a runner for Irish crime boss Doyle Lonnegan (Shaw). Luther's killed just after he tells his protege he's getting out of the game and to head for the big-time with Henry Gondorff (Newman).

The rest of the film is an elaborate and often hilarious confidence game on the part of Hooker and Gondorff to 'sting' Lonnegan in revenge for Luther's death. The soundtrack's ragtime from the incomparable Scott Joplin.

Director George Roy Hill did an excellent job bringing this cast together and creating a masterfully acted and timed film. "The Sting" won 7 Academy Awards in 1973 and is still very much worth watching. We just recently bought the film on DVD so we could get rid of the VHS and it was very much worth the investment.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - great edition of a great movie!
I've been looking for a copy of this movie for ages, and the remastered 5.1 audio and 16:9 presentation really did it for me. I've always loved this movie, and this was better than I could have hoped.
